Revisiting an Old Neighborhood

Crime writer Megan Abbot looks back at Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem, once the stomping ground for Genovese boss Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno. David Durk and Ira Silverman wrote in their 1976 exposé The Pleasant Avenue Connection, "If you knew the right people, you could go there at three in the morning and borrow 50,000 dollars in cash or rent a submachine gun or arrange to fix a judge or pick up three kilos of heroin." Ms. Abbott writes that neighborhood changes can be deceiving, and the underlying reality of the mob in New York has changed very little. The Genovese crime family still controls the town, and all of the underworld services it offered on Pleasant Avenue in the 1970s still are available today even if through a different boss on a different street. 80s Child Star Corey Feldman On Pedophilia In Hollywood

In an explosive interview earlier this month on Nightline 1980s child star Corey Feldman made claims that the entertainment industry in Hollywood is riddled with pedophiles who prey on the young talent:"The number one problem in Hollywood was, and is, and always will be pedophilia. That's the biggest problem for children in this industry." Feldman alleges that he was molested at the age of fourteen, and his long-time friend Corey Haim who died last year after struggling with substance abuse was sexually abused as a child by an unnamed "Hollywood mogul" who "needs to be exposed." Feldman says "there's a lot of really, really sick, corrupt people in this industry, and there are people in this industry who have gotten away with it for so long that they feel they are above the law, and that's got to change. New Orleans, Louisiana, the birthplace of the American Mafia has a deserved reputation as a corrupt town where mob boss Carlos Marcello ran his rackets for decades with impunity. Joe Valachi, mob turncoat, appearing before a U.S. Senate committee in 1963 testified that he asked Vito Genovese if he could visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Genovese told him no explaining no gangster could enter Louisiana without Carlos Marcello's permission. The rule applied even to Genovese. "They don't want visitors," Valachi told senators. The good people of the Big Easy think Boston, MA should get the dubious honor as “The Country's Most Corrupt City” following revelations about the relationship between Irish gangster Whitey Bulger and members of law enforcement. “There is no doubt that Boston had the most rotten criminal justice system imaginable and that New Orleans, for all the crimes of its Police Department, could not compare. At least our feds are not in bed with gangsters and murderers.” Sorry New Orleans, it don't wash. Your city retains the crown. You know the movie… everyone knows the movie some consider the best boxing flick ever. Everyone knows the actor, Sylvester Stallone's portrayal of "Rocky" is known worldwide but Stallone was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on the same day Mike Tyson was inducted. One's a real boxer. The other played one on the big screen. Call me a not-so-wise guy, but I went to the Tropicana recently to get the Las Vegas Mob Experience. It wasn’t the real mob experience, of course. But who wants to pay good money to take a bullet behind the ear or play squat-and-rot in a prison cell? This Mob Experience was touted as a much more entertaining place where the ghosts of Vegas past circulate freely, and some mugs get “made” while others get “whacked.” Although its grand opening is set for tonight, short-pockets guy that I am, I bought the “preview special” ticket at $29.95 and toured the place ahead of the crowd. After peeling off a few simoleons — they take simoleons and major credit cards — I noticed that for only $999.95 I could receive the “Godfather” package, which would give me VIP entry for life, other perquisites and an annual reception with mob family members, characters and celebrities. “I ought to be able to get someone hit for that price,” I thought. Following a series of persistent government investigations and ensuing arrests in the recent past the Italian underworld issued a series of ominous threats against government officials. In August the 'Ndrangheta detonated a bomb at the entrance to the apartment building of Salvatore Di Landro, top anti-mafia magistrate in Reggio Calabria. Earlier this month the same group left a bazooka outside the courthouse offices of chief prosecutor Giuseppe Pignatone. In response to the violent threats by the mobsters eighty Italian soldiers today will begin patrols in Reggio Calabria. A Sicilian prosecutor announced last week that Italy's three dominant organized crime groups, Cosa Nostra or Sicilian Mafia, the Camorra or Neapolitan Mafia, and 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia, recently held a joint summit to assemble a hit list against its enemies in the government and the press. A similar meeting took place in the 1990s, when the Sicilian Mafia was waging war against the state and assassinated anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
