Crime writer Megan Abbot looks back at Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem, once the stomping ground for Genovese boss Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno. David Durk and Ira Silverman wrote in their 1976 exposé The Pleasant Avenue Connection, "If you knew the right people, you could go there at three in the morning and borrow 50,000 dollars in cash or rent a submachine gun or arrange to fix a judge or pick up three kilos of heroin." Ms. Abbott writes that neighborhood changes can be deceiving, and the underlying reality of the mob in New York has changed very little. The Genovese crime family still controls the town, and all of the underworld services it offered on Pleasant Avenue in the 1970s still are available today even if through a different boss on a different street. Reputed Genovese crime family associate John “Johnny Pizza” Porcello who owns a pizzeria in the Bronx, hence the nickname, was hit with a forfeiture order totaling more than $18,000 by the feds. When FBI agents arrested him last year on mob racketeering charges, they discovered that he was carrying on him a wad of dough – as in more than 4,000 in American greenbacks. Porcello, who’s plead guilty to loansharking charges, is awaiting sentencing in Brooklyn federal court. Reputed capo Anthony “Rom” Romanello, 74, who was facing a gun charge got lucky when a cooperating witness for the feds had a heart attack over the weekend while prosecutors were prepping him for the gangster’s trial. After Judge Leo Glasser adjourned the trial, prosecutors offered Romanello a deal — dropping a serious firearm charge that carried a mandatory five-year sentence. For copping to gambling and conspiracy, Romanello faces only 10 to 16 months in prison. The judge also lifted the restriction on Romanello associating with childhood friend Anthony (Tough Tony) Federici who owns Parkside and is a reputed Gambino capo. Food caterer and reputed Genovese associate Frank DiMattina has been convicted on gun and extortion charges after threatening Walter Bowers, a rival vendor to withdraw his bid on a lunch contract for St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School. DiMattina faces a minimum of five years behind bars to a maximum of 20 years when sentenced in Brooklyn federal court." Judge Jack Weinstein allowed the defendant to remain free on bail pending sentencing so his 40 employees would not be put out of work. But DiMattina's bond was doubled to $2 million. Officials say Frank “Frankie D” DiMattina, reputed Genovese crime-family associate and reality-star wannabe, was caught on tape by a security camera breaking a rival caterer’s windows. Federal prosecutors plan to use DiMattina’s film debut as new evidence in their extortion case against the 43-year-old alleged mob associate. DiMattina's attorney is expected to argue that the man in the grainy video, his face obscured by a baseball cap, is not DiMattina. Prosecutors say the rival caterer will ID DiMattina as the culprit. April 16, 2012 is the trial date set by a Manhattan federal judge for the extradited Emilio Fusco in the 2003 murders of Genovese capo Adolfo Bruno and mob associate Gary Westerman in Springfield, MA. The pair were reportedly hit over concerns they were talking to the feds. Since the days of Prohibition the New York-based Genovese crime family has controlled the underworld in Springfield, MA. Beginning in 1919, Springfield's Carlo Sinischalchi was labeled "King of the Bootleggers," but less than a year later he was shot and killed. Widow, Pasquelina Sinischalchi, inherited the business and married Antonio Miranda, a close ally of New York crime bosses Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. By all accounts, this event allied the region's enduring links with the Genovese family. During the last several decades the Springfield territory has been controlled for the Genovese crime family by Francesco "Skyball" Scibelli, Salvatore "Big Nose Sam" Cufari and Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno. The feds continue to hammer the Genovese mob as well as the other NY families, lets hope they can break histories' legacy in Springfield. Is the N.Y. FBI allocating far too little to fight the five Organized Crime Families? The answer is a definite Yes, according to a story by mob expert Jerry Capeci, editor of Gang Land News. The site reports that the number of agents investigating New York wiseguys is at an all time low. One agent, the site reports, calls it “dangerously low.” Still, Gangland reports that “G-men and women from other federal agencies have jumped into the fray to fill the void against the thousands of wiseguys and associates of the infamous Five Families.” An example, according to the site, were the arrests last week by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Diplomatic Security Services (DSS) agents with the State Department arrested three wiseguys and four associates of the Gambino and Bonanno crime families on racketeering charges. The New Jersey State Commission of Investigation concluded that the Genovese crime family still has its hands in the state's waste industry with the local DeCavalcante family.
