Informant List Used as Bargaining Chip by Montreal Mob: source

The list of police informants stolen by a retired intelligence officer in the Montreal police force was used as a bargaining chip by mafia lawyers to get reduced sentences for their clients, according to a source close to the investigation. The source told The Gazette that retired police officer Ian Davidson, who was found dead in a Laval hotel room with his throat cut, had tried to shop the list of 2,000 informants to the mafia. He said police were able to seize the list and claimed that no informant names were compromised. According to the coroner’s report, Davidson’s death was a suicide. Ex Cop Committed Suicide Autopsy Confirms

An autopsy performed Thursday on the body of retired Montreal police detective Ian Davidson confirms that his death at a Laval hotel Wednesday was indeed a suicide. The coroner’s report is not yet available, but police investigators said the examination reinforced their earlier findings that Davidson had slashed his throat on the same day his name was made public as the mole inside the Montreal police department. It's alleged that Davidson was trying to sell the identities of some 2,000 undercover police informants to the Mafia for $1 million. His body was discovered by a chambermaid Thursday morning in a pool of blood in the bathroom of his hotel room. There was no sign of forced entry or of the presence of a third party. Laval Police are investigating the apparent suicide of a police officer who allegedly tried to sell secrets to the mob. Police confirmed a man's body was found Wednesday morning inside a room at the hotel, but they would not release his identity. It soon became clear that the body is that of Ian Davidson, who served 30 years on the force before retiring with a clean record. Const. Nathalie Lorrain said Montreal police investigators were also at the scene but were guarded with their information. Lorrain would not confirm whether the dead man was Ian Davidson nor did she reveal the cause of death. "The victim is identified, the family has been advised of the situation and unfortunately I cannot reveal, for now, the identity of the person until the investigation in the hotel is complete," Lorrain said outside the hotel. According to information obtained by Radio-Canada a retired Montreal police officer tried to sell a list of informants to the Mafia after his retirement in January. It's alleged the officer was asking for a six-figure sum for the list. Police said he was one of only two or three people who had access to the list. Didier Deramond, of the Montreal police, said information was received in April 2011 through a wiretap investigation. That information led to the suspect's arrest in October, he said. Police said the identities have not been compromised. No charges have been brought. The RCMP charged Colagero Milioto, Raynald Desjardins, Vittorio Mirarchi, Felice Racaniello and Jack Simpson, suspected mobsters tied to the Rizzuto clan for their alleged roles in the November hit against former NYC Bonanno boss Salvatore Montagna. Yesterday, without explanation a judge incredibly denied a defense request to unseal the court documents which resulted in the seizure of BlackBerry messages leading to their arrest. Federal prosecutor Yvan Poulin said it was in the public interest to not share the documents in any way. "Read the authorization (for the warrants) in your office" Poulin told the judge. "It speaks for itself . . . I can't say anything more about it . . . This is an exceptional case." The unprecedented secrecy over the documents suggests "that the RCMP and Crown prosecutors are trying to protect a more important investigation still under way, a well-placed source, or even national security." There's also speculation that the FBI may be ready to bust New York mobsters for their alleged roles in whacking Montagna who aligned himself with the Calabrian Mafia or 'Ndrangheta in a bid to take over the Montreal underworld from the Sicilian Mafia or Cosa Nostra with which the Rizzuto clan is affiliated. BlackBerry Messages Accessed in Montagna Murder Probe

Ronald McInnis, spokesman for Quebec’s provincial police Thursday morning refused to confirm or deny a media report that investigators obtained access to a series of encrypted BlackBerry messages during their probe into the Mafia-style slaying of Salvatore Montagna. “We do not reveal our investigation methods,” he said. Five suspects in the killing of mobster Salvatore Montagna, who was gunned down in November and had criminal links in Canada and the United States, were arrested last month. Incriminating messages sent by one of the suspects, Vittorio Mirarchi, a businessman with alleged ties to the mafia, led to the arrests, the La Presse newspaper said. One of the men charged with the first-degree murder of Montagna at a house just east of Montreal, Raynald Desjardins, was a close associate of Vito Rizzuto, who was reputed to have led the Mafia in Montreal until he was extradited to the U.S. in 2006. Rizzuto is currently serving a 10-year prison term there. The others charged are Vittorio Mirarchi, Felice Racaniello and Jack Arthur Simpson. Moreno Gallo, a 66-year-old Montreal mobster who did time for a gangland murder, was on his way out of Canada Wednesday, his lawyer confirmed, after giving up his fight against deportation. Gallo was on his way to Italy of his own accord but under escort of the Canada Border Services Agency, said his lawyer Stephen Fineberg. “He’s being deported to Italy and from there he’s able to move freely,” Fineberg said, declining to note which city in his birth country Gallo was destined for, not where Gallo untimately plans to settle. “He’s a free man for the first time since 1974.” “He realized that for the rest of his life he was going to be vulnerable to suspension,” said Fineberg. Last year the Port of Montreal saw more than 28 million tons of cargo pass through. “Montreal, as [with] any other port in the country, because of the volume, it’s normal that we’re intercepting huge amount of illicit drugs and goods,” said Alain Surprenant, chief of operations with the Canadian Border Services Agency at the Montreal port. Border services said the value of drugs seized at the Port of Montreal was more than all other Canadian ports combined in 2009. President of the Montreal Port Authority, Sylvie Vachon said they are working with police and border services to make the port more secure and improve its reputation. “We try very hard to be a port that’s integrated [into the] community and for sure this image is not a good image for us,” she said. Montreal has long been a hub for the drug trade because of its proximity to the U.S., crime expert André Cédilot told CBC News. Airdrie RCMP continued to battle the reach of organized crime, domestic violence and traffic enforcement issues in 2011. The Airdrie RCMP's top cop, Insp. Tony Hamori, said organized crime continued extending its reach into communities surrounding the Calgary region over the year. "Organized crime continues to be an issue for us and it's going to be a priority we're going to recommend to city council and the police committee to carry forward into next year," Hamori explained. "It's not so much that organized crime is a problem in the city, it's that we're feeling the effects of organized crime from Calgary."
