Following the issuance of a warrant for his arrest last month Senator Nicola Di Girolamo, a member of Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, has resigned from parliament. The warrant alleges Di Girolamo participated in a 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia money laundering scheme.

The Senate voted to accept his resignation. A Rome judge ordered the arrest of Di Girolamo and 55 others on Feb. 23 as part of a probe into a money-laundering and tax-fraud ring that allegedly involved FastWeb SpA and Telecom Italia SpA's Sparkle unit.
Di Girolamo said he'll turn himself in to authorities later today. “In no way did I bring to this floor the disgrace of the ’Ndrangheta or the Mafia,” Di Girolamo said before the vote. “I may be the only person ever to be remembered for having resigned” from parliament, he said.

According to the Rome investigation Di Girolamo was part of a criminal conspiracy that includes FastWeb SpA founder and billionaire Silvio Scaglia.
