Providence, RI, US: Under Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy illegal FBI bugs were placed in Patriarca’s office from 1962 to 1965. Tapes indicate many political payoffs to the governor’s office, legislators and judges in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Patriarca was overheard on one tape while talking to Nicholas Bianco, a family member, “in this thing of ours, your love for your mother and father is one thing, your love for The Family is a different kind of love.” Excerpt from Deadly Alliance, a 2001 release by award-winning journalist Ralph Ranalli, “The Kennedy’s hated the Mafia, particularly their hometown mob boss, Raymond L. S. Patriarca, who had taunted the brothers during the McClellan committee hearings, saying: “You two don’t have the brains of your retarded sister.” Bobby Kennedy told a friend that he and Jack were ‘going after that pig on the hill,’ referring to the mob boss’s Federal Hill stronghold in Providence.”

He lingers for a few days before dying but never reveals his killers. Rumored he made comments of a sexual nature about Henry Tameleo’s girlfriend. An eye witness and finger print lifted from the Nazarian murder weapon produce an indictment for Patriarca Family member Rudolph Sciarra who is arrested and charged with the murder.

1963:

Providence, RI, US: February 1, Rudolph Sciarra is found not guilty of the Nazarian murder and released.

Washington, US: Joseph Valachi became the first Mafia member to provide a detailed looked at the inside of the organization. Having been recruited by FBI Special Agents, and testifying before the US Senate McClellan Committee, Valachi exposed the name, structure, power bases, codes, swearing-in ceremony, and members of this organization. All of this had been secret up to this point. Valachi testifies that he has known Patriarca since 1938. "I met him as a soldier when I met him," Valachi says, referring to his rank in the mob.

Sicily: A long, bitter and bloody civil war between Sicilian Mafiosi ends. The warfare and public opposition to it triggered numerous violations of the omerta code, and Sicilian authorities benefit in their struggle against the secret society.

Marfeo and Joe “Jo Zita” Schiavone were running a dice game without Patriarca’s permission.

Massachusetts, US: Joseph "The Animal" Barboza, a Portuguese associate of the New England Family, often used as "muscle" for Patriarca himself was arrested for illegal gun possession. While detained in jail, Barboza was sure that Patriarca or somebody would have posted his $100,000 bail for him. None of this happened. His friends, Arthur Bratso and Thomas DePrisco, began asking for donations. They had managed to collect $59,000 for Barboza's release. In November the pair showed up at the Night Lite Cafe looking for more funding. Instead they were murdered and dumped in the northern area of Boston and the $59,000 was stolen. Capo Illario Zaninno was believed to have been one of the murderers. Barboza sat in jail, while other friends of his were being killed off and pressured by the FBI to testify.
