The Las Vegas Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement will open its doors in mid 2011. Dennis Barrie, the creative director of the museum said "This is one of the most anticipated museum projects in the world. It is really a topic that evokes true interest with the American public, with museum people, with all sorts of people." The $42 Million dollar project not only tells the history of Las Vegas and Organized Crime but also the history of America. "There'll be controversy in this museum," Barrie said. "If there's not, we're not doing our job."
The featured exhibits will be called Mob Mayhem, The Skim, and Bringing down the Mob.
“Mob Mayhem” will feature the weapons used and the hidden messages that are often part of the murders committed by the Mafia. The exhibit’s centerpiece will be the St. Valentines Day Wall where in 1929 Al Capone ordered the brutal murder of rival mobsters in a Chicago warehouse. The mafia often relayed messages within the way someone was killed and this exhibit will give visitors a look into the coded part of the underworld.
“The Skim” will be based on the Mafias infiltration of the Las Vegas casino’s and the vast revenue it provided. The exhibit will show how the Mafia worked its way into the casino’s and skimmed money off the top. The centerpiece of the exhibit will be a wall papered with cash and will explain how Organized Crime worked the skim and diverted profits to various families. The Vegas Skim revenue shared among families across America.
“Bringing Down the Mafia” will feature methods employed by the Fed’s in fighting Organized Crime and will explore in depth, surveillance and wiretap techniques that were successfully used over the years by law enforcement. Visitors will also be able to listen to mob conversations that were recorded via these wiretaps and surveillance footage of actual mobsters. The exhibit will also explain the workings of the Witness Protection Program which was employed as a powerful tool by law enforcement.
A must see for any mafia buff offering very interesting information, museum director Barrie said he can promise that the story told will be “an honest one” depicting the role of organized crime through history and how it continues to this day. The Museum is being housed in the former federal courthouse and post office in downtown Stewart Ave. and is expected to see 250,000 to 600,000 visitors a year.
