Gangster-turned-FBI informant Henry Hill whose exploits were the basis of the 1990 Martin Scorsese mob film "Goodfellas" said Tuesday his struggles with alcohol again are to blame for his weekend arrest after a drunken disturbance at a hotel. Police hauled 66-year-old Henry Hill of Topanga, Calif., away in handcuffs Sunday after a disturbance in a Drury Inn lobby in Fairview Heights, Ill., while he was in the St. Louis area for a three-day showing of his artwork and to sign autographs at a nearby Larry Flynt strip club. Free on bond on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Hill told The Associated Press on Tuesday he doesn't remember much about the weekend flare-up at the Drury.
I don't know about everyone else but I have a problem with criminals making a living based on their reputations and all the misdeeds they have done. Weeks and Martorano come to mind right away but there have been others. Both are now "earners" due to book and movie deals. We are talking about murderers and racketeers. Somehow things are screwed up when a life of crime leads to "the pot of gold" and a life of labor leads to debt. Every wiseguy I have ever known considered the person with the "square job" a sucker and wore their lack of employment history like a badge of honor. it looks like they know something we don't, it's a statement about our society and people in general.
And while we're on this subject, one of my favorite rants, whats up with Jerry King. Here's a guy, an associate of the New England Family who's going along, making money then gets jammed up and it's time to sing. I think he's also looking for the "payday", a new life, some start up money, and when it's not coming quick enough he's calling a TV reporter putting his face on the news stating he's the informant who responsible for all the arrests in Operation Mobbed Up (video below). Fifteen minutes of fame,a death wish,book deal or he, like most wannabes is playing the angles and wants to see what shakes out.
