Tommy Lucchese: The Quiet Don

One of the mob’s most powerful leaders in the 20th century was Gaetano "Tommy" Lucchese, who lived quietly at 106 Parsons Blvd. in the exclusive Malba section of Whitestone for many years. Lucchese emigrated to the United States in 1910 at age 10 from Palermo, Sicily. He worked as a laborer in 1915 and one day lost his thumb and forefinger on the job. That’s when he entered a life of crime. Because of his deformed hand he was compared by a cop to the popular major league pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown. The nickname stuck. Lucchese moved up quickly in the mob and survived its wars. With the imprisonment of Frank Costello in 1952, he was believed to have inherited the role of underworld czar, capo of capos — the don. U.S. Marshals harassed Lucchese relentlessly without any meaningful results, and the government tried to revoke his naturalization as a citizen. But he never associated publicly with known criminals and seemed to lead a respectable life. His son went to the U.S. Military Academy and became an officer. For Immediate Release July 31, 2009 United States Attorney's Office District of Rhode Island Contact: (401) 709-5000 Union Officials, Contractor, Plead Guilty in Illegal Payment Scheme Nicholas Manocchio, the director of the New England Regional Organizing Fund (NEROF) of the Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA), pleaded guilty today to conspiring to receive money and other things of value from building contractors whose employees LIUNA represented. Gerald Diodati, a construction contractor, also pleaded guilty today to conspiring to make unlawful payments to LUNA officials, including Manocchio. Acting United States Attorney Luis M. Matos, Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Department of Justice Criminal Division, and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, jointly announced the guilty pleas, which the defendants entered during separate hearings before U.S. District Court Judge William E. United States Attorney Robert Clark Corrente and Bruce G. Ohr, Section Chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the Department of Justice, announced the complaint, which was filed on October 17 in U.S. District Court, Providence, but placed under seal until today, when the defendants were arrested and appeared in court.
